Grandma’s Special Recipie Cookies – Ginger & White Chocolate Chip

Hi! How is everyone doing this evening of 12-12-12? I spent the evening at a geocaching event and had an amazing time. Upon returning home, Richard and I decided to hit 7-11 for some Slurpees. At least, that was the intention.

Once we arrived at 7-11, a Slurpee didn’t sound all that great because it was pouring buckets of rain outside and I was already frigid from wearing shorts and no sweatshirt out. I ended up picking up these cookies, some jelly beans and some really gross gummy worms. Funny 7-11 related food story though, a while back they had a delicious lime-ade flavor that I liked to mix with the cherry. For some reason, the lime flavor is WAY more airy than the other flavors. I grabbed my cup, filled it 3/4 with cherry Slurpree and moved over to the other machine that had the lime-ade flavor. I pulled the handle and it started making some weird noises. I stopped and checked to see if the light was on saying that it was out of order at the moment, but it wasn’t, so I put my cup back under the spout and pulled the handle again. A small amount of the lime-ade flavor finally made its way into my cup before a GIANT air bubble in the line blew the lid off my cup and caused the contents to explode everywhere. The noise was so loud that it startled me and I dropped the cup on the overflow tray, causing the little remaining Slurpee to spill. I had Slurpee all over me and all over the counter and machine, but I couldn’t stop laughing. Hands down, best Slurpee experience ever.

Anyways, on to the cookies. I always forget how indifferent I am when it comes to Grandma’s cookies. They are usually sort of bland and extremely dry, but apparently I go enough time between eating them that I forget this and always find myself slightly disappointed everytime I buy them. Not to mention that I can only ever find them at gas stations and vending machines, which makes me think that they aren’t exactly the best quality. Also color me surprised to find that they are made by Frito-Lay. Hey Frito, stick to chips, thanks!

Upon first glance, the cookie looks spotted with nuts, not white chocolate chips like I had expected. I even checked the package again to make sure that it didn’t say nuts and maybe my thumb was covering it. Nope, white chocolate chips. You can visibly see the cinnamon and nutmeg in this cookie in the dough. Let’s cut to the chance here, MAN O MAN are these dry. When first biting into the cookie you are fooled into thinking that you will be enjoying a nice chewy cookie, but they are so dry. The cookie itself has a decent flavor, heavy on the gingery/spicy side. Like I might have to take a couple of Tums after eating these cookies. The white chocolate chips are lost it the mix and honestly do nothing more than bring a little crunch to the table.

cookie2Texture: 2/5 – If you skipped the whole portion above to get to the number ratings, let’s just recap. THESE ARE REALLY DRY. These would have been better if they were a solid gingerbread cookie instead of trying to make them chewy.

Smell: 4/5 – These smell really good, although when you smell the bag, there is a hint of wax? It smells like a gingerbread candle in there.

Appearance: 3/5 – The white chocolate chips look like nuts in this cookie and for some reason they shaved off the pieces that stuck out to make the cookie flat. How peculiar.

Taste: 3/5 – Overall, these cookies are OK. If you like a spicy gingerbread, these are for you, BIG TIME. Definitely not my go to cookie when it comes to gingerbread and I think Grandma needs to make a few adjustments to her recipe. These cookies contain something called Propylene Glycol Monoesters of fats, which I’m pretty sure it means it contains monster fat. Don’t eat during a full moon.

    I wonder if they press them right after they finish baking to get them uniformly flat for the way they package them. Hot white chocolate + press = flat.
