Limited Edition Chex Mix Muddy Buddies – Peppermint Bark

Posted in Chips, Confectionaries by

While wandering the aisles of Walmart late the other night, I spotted this amongst the planogram reset they were completing down their seasonal food aisles. I forgave them a little for this gem, despite getting my hopes up by hanging a sign over the Pringles that said ‘pumpkin’. Needless to say I rifled through all of the cans of Pringles looking for the pumpkin flavor, but then realized they had handwritten signs along all the lines of shelving for where their Thanksgiving products were going – DOH. I love all things peppermint. LOVE. So I had high hopes for this snack mix.

I have tried the original Muddy Buddies from Chex Mix, and I don’t care for them. As most food, homemade Muddy Buddies are far superior. I’ve never heard of or thought of a peppermint Muddy Buddy though. Delicious idea! Upon opening the bag I was greeted with a very strong peppermint smell. MMMmmmmm… I was half expecting it to be a melted mess inside. When I think peppermint bark, I think of mass quantities of white chocolate, but to my surprise, not a mess at all. Instead of actual white chocolate, its more of a white peppermint powder.

I popped a handful in my mouth and was greeted with a lovely peppermint flavor but was surprised to crunch down and find a corn Chex inside. I think my Chex of choice would have been rice. But after a few more handfuls, I couldn’t stop myself. I felt like a shark in a feeding frenzy. This stuff is adictingly good. Yeah I just made that word up, but whatever – making up new words is a sign of genius. The only downfall from enjoying this delicious treat is the mass quantities of white powder. Your face will look like you either didn’t wipe your mouth after brushing your teeth, or you just did a bunch of cocaine. Your fingers will be coated as well, but much like Cheetos, part of the appeal is licking your fingers clean, duh.

Texture: 4/5 – I enjoy that they chose a powder vs. actual white chocolate on these as they make them much easier to eat large quantities of. The texture is nice and does not taste gritty from the powder and the crunch of the Chex is perfect.

Smell: 5/5 – These smell just as good as they taste. Delicious!

Appearance: 4/5 – These Chex are caked with the peppermint powder, so there is no mistaking that the flavor will be strong.

Taste: 5/5 – If you like Chex and peppermint, these babies are for you. They are a nice balance of peppermint, not overpowering like a bag of corn Chex coated in Altoids. I honestly could (and probably will) kill this entire bag in one sitting, so note to self, stock up before you can’t find it anymore. I also think a chocolate peppermint version would be very good. Almost like a Thin Mint. In short, try them! You will probably like them… or love them like I did.

I love your blog – the review set up is great. I like how you break it down to appearance, taste, smell, etc 🙂

I need to be on the lookout for these because I looove muddy buddies and peppermint bar so the idea of combining the two is great!

Thanks Natalie! It was the first time I attempted to paint my nails this way. In theory it was easy, nail polish + French tip nail strips. In reality it took 4 coats of orange polish and a lot of waiting to paint the black tips. About 3 hours of waiting haha.

Hi Donna – how strange that they changed the design! Maybe they decided that hunks of peppermint bark on front are not nearly festive enough – I’ll have to keep my eye out for the fancy new bag, especially since I decided to eat the remainder of the one I had for lunch the other day. Model of dietary perfection here 🙂

I have to agree that these do not disappoint! To avoid the messy white powder all over my hands and face, I prefer to eat one square at a time. Then when all the big pieces are gone, I tip the bowl up and pour the crumbs right into my mouth! But hey, that’s just me!
I’ve already gone through 2 bags, well, maybe 3, I’ve lost track : ) I’ve only purchased them at Walmart off of the cardboard display you mentioned. When I was the tonight, I was sad to discover that the display has been dismantled. The pb & chocolate bags were all pulled on the shelf with the other Chex Mix. Peppermint Bark was nowhere to be found!! There wasn’t even a tag on the shelf for that flavor. Surely they haven’t stopped making this delicious flavor before Thanksgiving is even here!
Guess I’ll have to keep my eyes out for the special bag the next time I’m in Target. Thanks for the great review. Now, back to Google to see how to create this treat at home.

Hi Michelle, sounds like you’ve got the right idea when it comes down to enjoying this treat. I too could not find anymore at Walmart last night. I’m hoping that they just sold quickly and are going to restock.

As far as making your own – that is definitely a yummy idea. Because there is no actual chocolate involved you would need something as a binding agent. Maybe melted butter, plus finely ground candy canes plus a bit of powdered sugar (to even out the peppermint flavor)? This sounds like diabetes waiting to happen.

If you find or make a delicious recipe let me know!

Hi Beverly, so far this product has been spotted at Target and Walmart. According to various sources the design of the package is a bit different at Target, which has a snowman on the front. Check in your stores seasonal section! 🙂

Where can I find these? Have checked 6 different stores including Walmart with no luck. I’m wanting more of these. If anyone can help to let me know where to find I would appreciate it. I live in Temecula can.

I have noticed that the Walmart by me has had trouble keeping these in stock. I imagine its because the demand is greater than they expected. Have you checked Target? They are the only other retailer that I have spotted these at. Good Luck! 🙂

I am very disappointed in my Walmart in Billings Montana. They have no Chex Peppermint muddy buddies? ? I look forward to them every year. I wish you would make them all year round. They are my favorite. Thanks and Blessings. Debra Fawn Kimbell.
