Happy Easter Fools y’all! Easter has never really been my thing – though the idea of an Easter egg hunt is a lot of fun. It really is my cup of tea, especially because I really enjoy geocaching. (if you don’t know what geogaching is, it’s pretty much people using coordinates to find tupperware in the woods, or you can click here to actually learn more about it. It is addicting though, don’t say I didn’t warn you) However, I can’t help but feel secretly judged, especially as an adult, when others are watching you hunt and staring at you like you’re an idiot as you pass over 10 eggs in your searching frenzy. April fools day is also not really my thing, as I feel most of the jokes that people find “funny” today are pretty uncouth. I don’t like being duped, and I don’t like being scared, so count me out in the prank party. I do however love the idea of Easter on April Fools Day, it just seems too perfect for so many reasons – mostly the memes. Give me all the memes.
ANYWAYS – another reason why I like Easter besides the Anxiety Egg Hunt is the free pass to eat as much candy as you want without having to have an inner dialogue with yourself. Kit Kat’s for breakfast? Sure! Swedish Fish for a snack? YEP. Peeps for supper? Ehhhh.. questionable.
Honestly I forgot I even bought these, and it wasn’t until I was tossing some stuff from my stash that I found them at the bottom of a reusable bag (heyyyy California!) While these Peeps have been out for some time, I feel like they are the perfect treat for today. Seasonable and slightly questionable. My kind of holiday…?
Before we get started, lets recap on previous year’s mystery flavors:
2017 brought us – maple syrup, blueberry, and grape slush
2016 brought us – chocolate milk, buttered popcorn, and sour cherry
Now don’t get me wrong, I love Peeps, but much like candy corn (another hated delicacy) they are only good in moderation. I really did not need 30 of these mystery flavor Peeps. I would settle for one package with one row each. Money I guess.
IF YOU HAVEN’T TRIED THESE AND DON’T WANT TO KNOW THE FLAVORS YET, STOP READING NOW
Flavor #1 – I immediately knew what this flavor was by the smell before I even tasted it. Root Beer. I had a brief moment of panic before tasting these where I questioned myself if I would remember what root beer tasted like since I gave up soda in 2005. Nope, I still remember, however the flavoring of these was very faint. They could have added a little more flavoring if you asked me.
Flavor #2 – I struggled slightly with this flavor, and got it half right. I thought it was lemon-lime (as did quite a few people on the internet apparently) but its just plain ole Lemonade. I wish that these would have had a little more tartness to them like a lemon curd vs the hint of flavoring. Much like flavor #1, I thought they really could have punched these up a bit in the flavor department.
Flavor #3 – I drew a total blank on this one. To me, it tasted like just a generic berry flavor, similar to cotton candy flavoring, but it turns out that these are Blue Raspberry. The flavoring in these were the most prominent of the three mystery flavors though definitely tasted the most artificial. I just had a brief thought that it would have been cool if somehow they turned your mouth blue, but then I remembered that if we are following this idea, then your mouth would be brown for flavor one and jaundice yellow for flavor two, this is why I think before I speak folks!
Of the three, I enjoyed flavor 2 the most, I think mostly because I like lemon flavored candy. Next year I hope they take a page out of the 2016 book and go a little more adventurous with their flavor choices. If I had to pick one of these to be a permanent Peep flavor, I would choose flavor 1, only because the only root beer thing I can think of out there are root beer barrels, and lets face it, those are reserved for grandma’s candy dish.
I hope everyone had a great Easter, and a not so prank filled April Fools Day. What mystery flavor would you like to see next year?
