Well well well…
Hey friends! Who’s ready for some tasty holiday reviews? I have been on a rather long hiatus – actually I have no idea how I’ve managed to go nearly a year without posting – where does the time go? Oh yeah – work.
So with the onset of the holidays – which I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving if you are into that sort of thing – we get an array of delicious holiday flavored… things! I feel like as a child, Peeps were originally just an Easter food, but it seems that there is now a Peep for every holiday, which I’m totally okay with because I love these tasty little marshmallow dollops.
Red velvet is something I’ve personally never really been into. Don’t get me wrong, I like the flavor, but I feel like most red velvet cakes that I have eaten have been way too dry, not to mention that its pretty customary for them to have cream cheese frosting, while tasty, doesn’t usually agree with my lactose intolerant old lady body. What is red velvet anyways?
a rich cocoa-flavored cake with a distinctive reddish color, typically prepared as a layer cake with buttercream or cream cheese icing.
Wow thanks internet! So, red… chocolate. Got it.
First bite was okay. They tasted like cocoa to me – which is pretty much what I was expecting. I think what I found the most disappointing was the fact that they were dipped in cream flavored fudge, which tasted nothing like cream cheese or buttercream frosting. I think that had the fudge been flavored more, that it would have really sold this flavor for me, but honestly I was pretty underwhelmed. White fudge in general to me tastes kind of generic and cheap, and I feel like even a slight addition of butter flavor to the fudge would have changed the flavor profile to more align with that of Red Velvet and not a tuxedo hot chocolate.
Texture: 4/5 – In general, I love the texture of Peeps. I think the sanding sugar on the outside mixed with the fluffy mallow on the inside makes for the best combination of just a little crunchy. If you like sand in your food. Which apparently I do.
Smell: 3.5/5 – These smell of cocoa when you open the package, but something about it seems slightly off. I can’t put my finger on it, but it just doesn’t smell overly appealing.
Appearance: 5/5 – I think out of all of the holiday Peeps (bird version) that these are the prettiest. The deep red sanding sugar makes me think of velvet and I like how they are slightly mixed into the white fudge dip at the bottom.
Taste: 3/5 – These were okay. The cocoa flavor is there, but not overly present, and when you take a bite with the cream flavored fudge on the bottom, its completely lost. As I said previous, I think that had the fudge been more cream cheese flavor, that it would have paired with the cocoa flavoring better versus completely steamrolling over it. I don’t foresee myself buying these again.
