Better Chip – Jalapeño and Sea Salt

Evenin’! I had a really major hankering for some nachos today – but cheese and I aren’t really friends, despite my undying love, and I wanted the gross kind of nachos that you can only get at ball games, gas stations, and movie theaters. I can’t honestly think of the last time I purchased nachos from a gas station, but the more I tossed the idea around of caving in after I got off work – the worse it sounded. Nothing good would come of this!

So I rummaged around in my stash of foods to see what I had that would potentially pacify my craving for cheesy spicy nachos. I picked up these Better Chips at SaveMart a couple of weeks ago and kind of forgot about them because the bag is rather small, and they got smashed behind a bunch of other chips, that I have not had the courage to try yet.

I was curious what I was getting myself into with these. They claim to be all natural and better, but was I going to be eating a spicy salty cardboard puck? When I opened the bag, which has a tear spot vs just opening them like normal chips. I attempted to tear them across the top because I found it more aesthetically pleasing, but I couldn’t get it to tear all the way so I had to opt for down the side. It really made me feel inept at opening a simple bag of chips. THANKS GUYS.

They had a faint smell of jalapeño, but nothing overbearing. I liked that the flavor was baked into the chip instead of heavily sprinkled on top. These chips were kind of a silent killer. I popped one in my mouth and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious they were. They had an excellent balance of corn, salt and spice from the jalapeño, then the more I chewed, the progressively hotter they got. Have you ever had spicy food where you feel like the only recourse to keep the spice at bay is to continue eating at a continuous pace? Thats what happened with these. The bag was probably gone in 1.5 minutes. I’m not proud, but they were scrumptious.

Texture: 4/5 – These had a satisfying crunch to them and I really enjoyed the absence of spray on flavor that usually makes things a little gritty and messy.

Smell: 2/5 – There was hardly any smell at all to these chips. This is probably due to the ingredients being baked into the chip.

Appearance: 2/5 – In my line of volunteer work, I have seen a lot… A LOT… of emesis. (if you don’t know what that is, Google it when you’re not eating lunch) The chunks of jalapeño kind of reminded me of this, which did not make for a visually appealing snack.

Taste: 4/5 – These chips were really tasty. I would love to enjoy them with a sandwich, and wish that more sandwich places would carry them as a generic chip alternative. They had a nice crunch, the flavor was tasty, the heat was just enough, not to the point where they were too hot, and you get a decent amount for your buck. The only thing that could have taken these to the next level would be if they had a hint of cheese. Yum!

Indecision 2012 – Angie’s Artisan Treats

What’s good friends? I’m sure like most of you who are in the USA you have been glued to your TV watching the pending election results. I for one am not one to delve into politics much, but I find myself getting extremely anxious every 4 years with the announcement of the new president. I am not going to go on any sort of political rant, as this is not the place for it, but I will say that I will be happy when this is all over and done with. I am sick of seeing campaign stuff EVERYWHERE.

So tonight, in the spirit of the election, I thought I would present to you two fancy new holiday foods and you can decide which you like! I have never seen Angie’s Artisan Treats Holidrizzle Kettle Corn in stores before. I feel like she must have partnered up with Snoop Doggs camp to come up with that name. The two flavors that I have seen thus far are Which Chocolatier Peppermint and Dark Chocolatier Sea Salt. Popcorn and I have a love hate relationship. I love it and it hates me. Despite the impending upset stomach that is to follow later, I could not resist trying these as I love kettle corn, more than I love plain buttery popcorn.

I decided to start with the White Chocolatier Peppermint flavor first. Upon first opening the bag, I only smelled a faint smell of peppermint. I was a bit disappointed that the bag is so large, yet is half air! I popped a handful in my mouth and gave it a whirl. I enjoyed the flavoring. The classic taste of kettle corn which is sweet with a hint of salt with the peppermint topping and drizzle of white chocolate were a nice pairing. I felt like they were a bit stingy with the white chocolate drizzle. So far most of what I have tasted from the bag I bought, I would say about 40% has white chocolate on it. Kind of a let down. While the flavor of this is good, and I didn’t realize that I was on a crazy train to attempting to eat the whole bag mindlessly, it does not hold a candle to the Peppermint Bark Chex Mix.

Texture: 3/5 – I don’t know if it is the white chocolate or the weather in California but I found that the popcorn was a bit mushy. The peppermint crystals added a nice crunch to the mix.

Smell: 3/5 – The aroma of this treat is rather non-existent. What you can smell is rather inviting though.

Appearance: 3/5 – Because of the color of the popcorn, you can’t easily see the white chocolate on the pieces, which makes hunting for the really chocolate-y pieces a bit tough. I do like the addition of the red peppermint crunchies instead of mixing the mint flavor into the chocolate. It gives it a nice festive kick.

Taste: 3.5/5 – Overall the flavor is pretty middle of the road. I enjoyed it, but I felt like it kind of missed the mark. The mixture of sweet and salty is definitely present but nothing really took it to the next level.

Next we have the Dark Chocolatier Sea Salt. I am an extreme fan of dark chocolate. I am the person that will dig out all the Special Dark Hershey’s minis that no one usually wants. A few years ago, I think maybe 4 years ago or so, my Mom and I were celebrating New Years Eve together. We decided to get a bar of dark chocolate to enjoy at midnight, and in our infinite wisdom, we chose a bar with the highest cacao percentage at the time. WHAT AN AWFUL MISTAKE. As we counted down the clock, we each snapped a little square off the chocolate and at midnight we gave each other a little peck and popped the chocolate in our mouths. It immediately turned into a mad dash for the trashcan because it was so bitter that you couldn’t even swallow it. To add insult to injury I had braces at the time and the chocolate was all kinds of stuck in them. Worst idea ever.

I imagined that the dark chocolate sea salt mix would be a nice balance of sweet and salty, and I was right. But with Sea Salt in the name, I was expecting a little more salt in the mix than just the light dusting in regular kettle corn. The chocolate drizzle in this mix greatly exceeded that of its counterpart, and was pretty satisfying. I do fail to see how this is considered a holiday flavor when I can easily find it on shelves year round from retailers like Costco and Target.

Texture: 3/5 – I encountered the same problem with the Dark Chocolate version of this treat as I did with the White Chocolate version, kind of mushy. Unlike the white chocolate version however, there were no saving elements like peppermint crystals to make up for the lack of crunch.

Smell: 3/5 – There was pretty much zero smell upon opening the bag.

Appearance: 4/5 – The dark chocolate version visibly had more chocolate in the mix than the white chocolate. I feel like the amount that was drizzled over was inviting and guaranteed you that you were in for a nice chocolate treat.

Taste: 3.5/5 – Trying a single piece by itself proves to be nothing spectacular. It really takes some investment of eating a few handfuls to taste the entire flavor. I wish that the sea salt element was a little more prominent in the flavoring. All in all it was good.

So in the end, I did what any self respecting foodie would do, I mixed the two together in my bowl. I feel like this made the entire thing extremely good, and it is an untapped market for Angie. Someone let that lady know.

Pepperidge Farms Milano Slices – Salted Pretzel

First off I would like to say hello! to all the people that have visited my humble little junk food blog from The Impulsive Buy! What an honor to be linked from their blog 🙂 hopefully I don’t disappoint.

Pepperidge Farms Milano Slices – Salted Pretzel. Let’s just let that sink in for a minute. Go ahead, dream about unicorns flying around in cotton candy clouds above the Pepperidge Farms factory as the clouds rain down deliciousness. Okay, back yet? So I must confess, I love sweet and salty snack foods. I may or may not have dipped potato chips into frosting, cinnamon twists from Taco Bell into their nacho cheese (that sounds really sick, but from the egging on of my old roommate I tried it and it was DELICIOUS), so on and so forth. I would also have to say that pretzels are probably one of my favorite snacks. Pretzels + cookies?! Yes please!

I spotted these on another food blog (sadly I can’t remember which) and knew I had to try them. I looked at all the usual places, Walmart, Target, Safeway, etc., but to my surprise I was only able to spot them at Walgreens. Not my first stop for cookies, but I’ll take it.

Now I don’t understand why Pepperidge Farms even bothers putting portion sizes on their nutritional facts. Anyone with a decent set of tastebuds knows that a bag of Pepperidge Farms cookies is one serving. I’m convinced they sprinkle crack into these things.

Behold. No, you are not looking at a sample of Miracle Grow. The picture on the bag clearly does not show how much salt are on these things. I thought the salt would be on the pretzel, not sprinkled all over the cookie. I tried these two different ways. First I put a cookie in my mouth chocolate side up. It was the familiar taste of a delicious light cookie and dark chocolate, mixed with a nice crunch from the pretzel and a undertone of salt. The salt was a bit overpowering but not to the point where I wouldn’t finish the bag. The second way I tried them, I put the cookie in my mouth chocolate side down. Holy salt lick Batman. Way too salty. It was like someone salted the fries at your favorite fast food place, couldn’t remember if they salted them, and then salted them again salty.

So, Protip: chocolate side up friends!

Texture: 4/5 – I enjoyed the crunch that the pretzel provided to this classic cookie, or maybe it was the salt that made it crunchy.

Smell: 3/5 – Upon opening the bag you could smell the delicious dark chocolate and buttery cookies.

Appearance: 3/5 – I can’t say that these are the most aesthetically pleasing cookie to look at, but you can definitely see what you’re getting into. The picture on the bag and the actual product vary.

Taste: 3.5/5 – These are pretty tasty, if you eat them chocolate side up or if you REALLY love salt. I would buy these again, but don’t give them to your friends that have high blood pressure.
