Goldfish Baked Graham Snacks – French Toast

Something new from the snack that smiles back, Goldfish crackers! French toast is one of my favorite morning treats, although I can’t recall the last time I had french toast. I never make it for myself, mostly because I never have eggs on hand and because of laziness, so it is usually something I will get when in the mood for breakfast at a diner. Goldfish o the other hand are something that I could probably eat on a daily basis if it weren’t for that whole cheese thing. A while back at a dinner gathering some friends and I were talking about Goldfish and one of my friends seemed truly confused as to why the massive box of Goldfish had a pour spout built in for any other reason but to pour them directly into your mouth. I can’t argue with him there.

Now I don’t know if it is was just lack of basic reading comprehension or if I was overjoyed to see these sitting on the shelf at Bel Air, but I didn’t even notice that they were graham when I picked them up. Needless to say I was a bit taken aback when I poured some on my desk at work one morning as a snack and was not expecting them to be graham at all. What I was expecting them to be? Who knows. I nibbled on a few and was pleasantly surprised with how close these tasted to actual french toast. The graham was sweet and maple-y and they were dusted with cinnamon and sugar. Good thing I work in the backroom at my job or people might have started questioning why I was covered in sand, but I think by now most people have come to accept that I always look like a hot mess when unpacking boxes and a little cinnamon and sugar never hurt anyone.

The grahams seem slightly bigger than a normal Goldfish cracker, but I think this is attributed to the fact that they are similar shaped, not exact. I don’t think their tails would hold up as a graham cracker. Despite their appearance change, they are still smiling at you as you shovel them into your mouth.

Texture : 5/5 – These have a great crunch to them, unlike the crunch you would find with a regular Goldfish cracker. But much like a graham cracker if you eat too much at once it will turn into a gooey mess in your mouth (this review is getting a little pornographic, jeez.) and they are slightly dry. The cinnamon and sugar will definitely find a new home between your teeth so be sure do to a little mirror check before heading into your next sales meeting.

Smell : 5/5 – When you open the bag you will be greeted by the familiar smell of french toast – yummy!

Appearance : 3/5 – I think the appearance of these little guys was kind of phoned in. I would have opted for a swirled fish ala Cinnamon Toast Crunch with the cinnamon and sugar coating on the outside, but that is why Pepperidge Farm has a product development department and I just write about it. Also I find that these could potentially make you look like you are enjoying some cat treats, which could be a nice ice breaker.

Taste : 4/5 – These were quite good. I think they would be even better sprinkled on top of a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I would not however go as far as to say that they will send you into a feeding frenzy like their older brother the regular Cheddar Goldfish cracker. I swear its not salt on the outside of those things, its crack. Of the few sweet offerings that Pepperidge Farm has put out in the ways of Goldfish (chocolate, cupcake, smores, etc) I think these would have to be my favorite of the lot. The maple really brings this to whole new level, taking it from a cinnamon and sugar graham cracker to the true french toast taste. I would probably buy these again if I were looking for some fishy finger foods.

Orville Redenbacher’s Pop Crunch – Brown Sugar Cinnamon

How’s it hanging internet? Tonight I bring you a new offering from Orville Redenbacher. How this man keeps conducting new flavors from the grave is beyond me. Another thing I didn’t know? That there was a Brazil, Indiana. If you are wondering how the two are related, Orville was from Brazil, Indiana. So if you’re ever looking to take a vacation to an exotic destination, but don’t have a lot of money, why not stop on by Indiana? You could tell people that you went to Brazil over a long weekend and they wouldn’t know the difference!

Brown sugar cinnamon sounds like a match made in heaven. I like cinnamon/sugar things, like making my own mixture and pouring it on hot buttered toast, so I’m sure bringing brown sugar into the mix will only turn this popcorn up to 11. Target/Archer Farms makes an insanely good cinnamon and white chocolate drizzled popcorn that comes out during the holiday season that I had hoped this would taste similar to. Sadly popcorn and I have a love/hate relationship. I love it, but it hates me so I had high hopes because anytime I subject myself to foods that I ultimately end up regret eating, it better dang well be worth it.

I was expecting a light dusting on the popcorn, but when I opened the bag I was surprised to find a bag full of heavily coated popcorn. I grabbed a handful and was pleasantly surprised at the nice buttery taste melded together with the sugary sweeteners from the brown sugar. The cinnamon added a nice spice to the mix to round out the whole flavor. Overall I really enjoyed this popcorn and it measured up with the Archer Farms brand that I love so much.

Texture: 4/5 – The popcorn retains its crunchiness despite the heavy sugar coating. The coating does make it slightly chewy at the end.

Smell: 5/5 – When you open the bag you can really smell the sugar and cinnamon. Delicious!

Appearance: 3/5 – Visually the exterior coating is quite visible and you can see how much sugar and cinnamon is actually used on this.

Taste: 4/5 – I really enjoyed this popcorn and would buy it again. This would be a nice afternoon snack or a delicious movie theater treat, not that I advocate bringing in your own food 😉

Limited Edition Pringles – Cinnamon & Sugar

If you are wondering what happened to the M&M review from yesterday, it will be back up in a bit. FIXED! Ever since the update came out for WordPress on mobile, I’ve been having a lot of issues with it constantly crashing and saving weird drafts of articles. So tonight when I reloaded the current articles on my phone, it overwrote the completed article with just pictures – cute!

Today while running around town, I stopped into Walmart to see if they had any new food stuffs to try. Low and behold right when I walked in, there a couple of boxes of Limited Edition Cinnamon & Sugar Pringles! Score!! I also picked up a few other things, but we will talk about those at a later time.

I figured that these would taste similar to the Limited Edition Pumpkin Pie Spice Pringles, considering that cinnamon is rather present in pumpkin pie. I popped the can and took a smell, all I really could pick out was the normal smell of Pringles. Much like the Pumpkin Pie Spice, there was hardly any visible flavoring on the chip. All you could really see was a tiny sprinkling of cinnamon. I ate one and couldn’t decide if it tasted the same as the Pumpkin Pie Spice. Luckily I bought another tube of those and was able to compare the flavors. They definitely have a different taste. I would venture to say that there is more sugar than cinnamon present – and they also turned up the volume on the salt factor. They were quite tasty though. I honestly have preferred the sweeter Pringles to any of the other limited edition flavors I have tried recently. The sweetness compliments the salt and I could easily see myself eating the whole tube at once.

Texture: 4/5 – Standard pressed potato texture. The addition of the cinnamon and sugar did not add any texture to the crisp.

Smell: 2/5 – Hardly and smell in the can, but smelling the crisp directly will yield you the faintest cinnamon smell.

Appearance: 2/5 – Despite the ample taste of cinnamon and sugar, visibly it looks like there is hardly anything on the chip. On quick glance, depending on what side is up, these could be mistaken for regular Pringles.

Taste: 3.5/5 – I enjoyed these but I didn’t find them all that special. The cinnamon and sugar adds a nice hint of sweetness to the crisp, but honestly you could achieve this at home with a little cinnamon and sugar mixed together sprinkled on regular Pringles. Buy a tube if you’re looking for something sweet and salty, but don’t fret if you miss out on them after the season is over, they aren’t overly memorable.

Emerald – Cinnamon Roast Almonds

I really suck at breakfast. I like to sleep in until the last possible second and rarely ever sit down for a bowl of cereal or toasted bagel. I am constantly searching for things that are easy to eat on the go, something that I can grab and snack on on my almost 40 mile drive to work. Sure I could opt for a Poptart, but I am ingesting 400 calories and crazy amounts of sugar first thing in the morning, which leads to a lovely crash midday. It wasn’t until recently that I started enjoying almonds. Are there any foods that you just started liking out of the blue? When the snack food fairy brought these home, I knew that they would be a breakfast staple for me.

Emerald has been kicking it into high gear with their new flavors. I recently reviewed the dark chocolate and peanut butter mix and the peanut butter and jelly mix. I’ve seen tons of different flavors on the shelf including chile lime, pumpkin spice, rosemary, etc. Cinnamon roast almonds don’t seem like that far of a stretch, it’s not like they are reinventing the wheel here, but surprisingly not all over the market. These come in a larger container as well as the 100 calorie packs for those of us who either are counting calories, enjoy forced portion control, or are just looking for a small snack. I enjoy a breakfast blend from Emerald for breakfast (imagine that!) often which includes cocoa roasted almonds – which I don’t find exceedingly good. They taste good, but they are not incredible. I was expecting the cinnamon roast almonds to follow suit. Instead I was greeted with almonds coated in cinnamon and sugar (ala Cinnamon Toast Crunch) and they had a nice roasted flavor. There is no shortage of coating as there is about half a teaspoon of coating in the bottom of the bag. I made the mistake of dumping this into my mouth and was overwhelmed with cinnamon and a little salt, which I did not taste while actually eating the almonds. Kind of a weird taste – I vote, don’t follow my lead and chuck the cinnamon dust.

Texture: 3/5 – These have the texture of your run of the mill almond. The coating on the outside makes for a little more grit but it also helps give the almond a little more crunch.

Smell: 4/5 – These have an intense cinnamon aroma.

Appearance: 3/5 – Nothing overly exciting about these almonds. The outside coating definitely lets you know what you’re getting into.

Taste: 5/5 – These are nothing short of delicious. The spice from the cinnamon mixed with the sugar accompanies the almond flavor quite nice. These make a delicious morning treat or after lunch snack. Check them out – you won’t regret it!

Holiday Peeps – Sugar Cookie

What up peeps? See what I did there? Is anyone not loving the time change? It’s got me all kinds of thrown off. I woke up this morning in a panic thinking I overslept because of how light it was outside and I fell asleep face down on my bed watching tv after work at 6:30 pm because it was pitch black outside, what in the world. Here’s hoping things equalize soon.

So with yesterday’s snack food fairy delivery I was gifted one of my favorite sugary treats, Peeps! It’s no secret that Peeps have joined the ranks of other holiday treats by producing orange pumpkins, strawberry hearts, and peppermint trees, but in my years of fandom I’ve never spotted sugar cookie. Curiouser and curiouser.

Sugar cookies are the epitome of holiday flavors for me. My grandmothers sugar cookie recipe is to die for and I know once the first batch is made that the season is upon us. They were always so neatly decorated with corresponding sanding sugars to match the cookie cutter shape, and I was envious of anyone with that amount of dedication. A few years ago I decided to make a batch and it quickly devolved into simple round cookies with multicolored sugars and one giant Santa vampire. I have no idea where that idea came from, my guess is that I probably got a little wild with the sprinkles while attempting to make a mouth and it all went downhill from there. He was delicious. I’ll see if I can find the picture I took of him pre-consumption.

Onto the Peeps. Maybe they should have been called doves for Christmas? I don’t know, Peeps scream Easter to me. I like that they chose to veer away from the mistake that McDonald’s made with their disco mold Holiday Pie and keep it simple with a light tan color. Then someone got the bright idea to dip them in chocolate. Now I’m of the school of thought that more is more. In most cases. I really wish they would have had a little conversation amongst themselves and took a poll around the office asking who’s grandma dips sugar cookies in chocolate. That’s right – no one. But for some reason felt their faintly almond/marzipan flavored confectionary couldn’t stand alone without the aid of a chocolatey companion. Honestly, that’s what killed these for me. The mallow is light and delicious, much like a fresh baked sugar cookie, then the chocolate comes stumbling in like your drunk uncle mumbling about who knows what and everyone accepts it but is equally confused.

Texture: 3/5 – I like fresh out of the package Peeps. They are light and fluffy and trick you into eating one too many. I love stale Peeps even more. Though with the chocolate coating on the bottom I don’t foresee them lasting much longer because I feel like it would get all weird. The hard chocolate matched with the fluffy mallow makes for a weird texture combo in my opinion.

Smell: 5/5 – Upon first smell after directly opening the package it was sugary almond extract heaven. Mmm mmm.

Appearance: 4/5 – Peeps pulled a no frills punch with these and I think it works for them. At least with the other holiday treats that I have tried, you can’t confuse these by appearance with a classic flavor.

Taste: 5/5 & 3/5 – I give a 5/5 to the mallowy portion of the Peep. It’s taste is a perfect combo of the flavor of a sugar cookie, marshmallow, and a lightly dusted sugar on the outside for that signature slight crunch. I give the Peep and chocolate combined a 3/5. I really fail to see where the chocolate is needed. I would annihilate a package of these if they were sans chocolate but in their current form, they make a great stocking stuffer.

Entenmann’s Little Bites – Limited Edition

I was surprised to see a new flavor of Little Bites that were not holiday themed. I sampled the pumpkin flavored ones, which I thought tasted a smidge like soap. I don’t know if that makes sense, but that’s okay. I really enjoy snicker doodle cookies, Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal, cinnamon and sugar on toast, and coffee cake, so I figured these couldn’t be that bad.

I was a bit surprised to open the package and see just four of these little guys staring back at me. They are about the size of a small donut hole and smell delicious. From my previous experience with the pumpkin flavor and the classic blueberry flavor, I knew that these were going to be moist. I don’t know if its intended that they be almost on the “I just undercooked these muffins and they are a little doughy/gooey” side or if its because they are trapped inside of thick plastic that keeps them from drying out, but these were moist as expected. They have the overall taste of cinnamon and sugar baked through, but also have small little crunchy pieces (really small) baked in as well. I must say the outsides of the muffins were a tad dry, but it didn’t ruin the overall flavor or texture. I think these would be a nice compliment to a cup of coffee or hot chocolate.

Texture: 4/5 – These had the moist texture of a fresh baked muffin. The outside was a little dry, but overall appealing.

Smell: 4/4 – Upon opening the package, I got a nice waft of sweetness and cinnamon.

Appearance: 3/5 – I was disappointed at how few were in the bag. I think I would have felt less ripped off if the bag was smaller. The overall exterior was inviting, though upon first glance I was unsure if they were supposed to be spotty as the picture on the box showed otherwise.

Taste: 4/5 – I enjoyed these and would venture to say that of the flavors I have tasted these have been my favorite. I think they stand well alone as a quick breakfast or lunch dessert and would also be a nice compliment to a hot beverage. Overall I really liked them.
