Taco Bell – Hot Flavored Tortilla Chips

Ding! Ding! Round Two – Fight!

Good Morning Friends! Anyone else drowning in their own body from allergy season? No? Just me? Great! I am truly miserable right now and feel like my head might just pop off. You know what might clear the sinuses? Some spicy chips!

Yesterday I talked about how I prefer Hot Taco Bell sauce on their culinary masterpieces so I was pretty excited that they decided to make that into a chip flavor.

Upon opening the bag I was immediately greeted with the strong smell of spicy. The chips did not look as covered in spices as the Mild chips did, but the deep red color of the chip said to me “I mean business”. I tried these chips two different times, the first time right after trying the Mild flavor and again the next day to confirm my thoughts about the flavors. I thought that perhaps I might have skewed the flavoring by eating something with a different flavor prior but I think I was able to get a good idea the first go around. Second time around just confirmed it for me.

Much like the Mild flavor – these chips are alright. They are nothing groundbreaking but don’t get me wrong, they are good. I would consider these kind of a slow burn hot. The more you eat, the hotter they get, causing you to eat more. Ever have that happen? Two other chip flavors come to mind when I think of the slow burn, Salsa Verde Doritos, and Spicy Szechuan Chex Mix (which I don’t think is even a thing anymore?). I don’t think I have ever demolished a bag of Chex Mix faster than the Szechuan flavor because of how spicy that stuff was.

The spiciness is a good level, not overpowering to it being the only flavor that you taste and it also has a subtle hint of smokiness. Much like the Mild flavor, I felt like these chips seemed “greasy” to me, even though they aren’t.

Overall, I think if I had to choose between the two flavors, I would choose the Mild chip flavor. While the Hot flavor is good, I felt like the overall flavor combination of the spices used in the Mild flavoring were more appealing. I also felt compelled to eat the whole bag of the Mild flavor because of the flavor, not because my mouth was on fire which I think would have been the case had I chosen to continue to eat the Hot flavor.

I think these would make really good chips in a Crunchwrap or something like that – bringing extra heat and a nice bit of crunch. Get on it Taco Bell! (just please think of me if you decide to roll with this idea – I could use a little kick back *wink* *wink*)

Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals – Nacho Cheese

The other day I brought you the au-natural version of these chips, but today I will be trying out the Nacho Cheese version. Now I don’t know about you, but when I think of a nacho cheese chip, I instantly think of a Doritos. There is just something so addicting about the super cheesy, slightly spicy chip that always tempts me to eat the whole bag.

Pepperidge Farm’s version looks a little less cheese coated and more spice. Most of their snacks have the flavor baked in with the exception of the Goldfish cracker, and even then, if you are looking for a cheese powder coated snack, you’ll have to opt for the flavor blasted. One advantage of this is that you don’t have Cheeto fingers when you’re done. Personally I think eating the cheese powder off your fingertips is akin to eating the crunchy part off the end of a corn dog (the best part) but to each their own.

When I popped open the bag I was slightly surprised to see how empty it was. Now I know chip companies pack their bags full of air so that you don’t end up with a bag of chip shards, but there is nothing more disappointing than opening a bag of chips and realizing you purchased more air, than chip. Pepperidge Farm air in a bag! Now with chips! Being lactose intolerant, I can appreciate a snack that goes a little easy on the cheese – not to say that I don’t torture myself with other cheesy foods.

The term nacho cheese usually conjures up thoughts of a mild cheddar cheese with a slight jalapeno flavoring to it – although I am not sure where all the spices come in on these chips, but I’ll go with it. Upon first bite… well… to me, tasted like the smell of BO. After I got past that, I could taste the slight spicy cheese flavoring to it, but the stank was pretty overpowering in my mouth. I am sure that some of you are wondering how something tastes like the smell of, but I assure you, it is possible. It is like when something is too flowery tasting, it tastes like the smell of perfume. Just go with it. Much like the original tortilla flavor that I tried the other day, these chips taste stale to me. They have a good crunch, but my brain just flashes STALE! STALE! STALE! ABORT! while I eat them. If I had to choose between these or the Simply Tortilla, the Simply Tortilla would win hands down, mostly because I can slather them with something like gross gas station nacho cheese or salsa.

Texture : 3/5 – These chips are GRAINY. I don’t know if it is from the way they are processed, or if it is because they are baked, or because of the cheese baked in, but these are really grainy. They do have a nice crunch to them though.

Smell : 3/5 – The smell does not match the flavor, there is a nice spice and cheese scent when you open the bag.

Appearance : 3/5 – To me these look more like a multigrain chip, than a nacho cheese tortilla chip. I do however like their size because it means that you won’t spear the top of your mouth while trying to stuff the entire chip into your mouth.

Taste : 2/5 – I really tried to like these but I could not get past the BO undertone. I found that if I ate a few at a time the flavor was more apparent, but I feel like the nacho cheese flavoring really missed the mark. I also thought the flavor was odd in that the fresh bag of chips tasted stale. I think that this is partially due to the chip being baked. All in all, I would most likely never buy these again unless there was a flavor tweak to them.

Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals – Simply Tortilla

Hello hello! Am I the only one who constantly says Pepperidge Farms? In fact, I find saying Pepperidge Farm rather weird, but it wasn’t until I started reviewing food that I had discovered that I was saying it wrong the last 29 years of my life – yes apparently I was saying Pepperidge Farms when I was an infant. Anyways, they have come out with a couple of new chips that I decided to give a try. Today I will be sampling the Simply Tortilla version, and tomorrow I shall bring you the other.

Now when I think Pepperidge Farm, I think cookies. Delicious, perfectly baked, I-can-eat-the-whole-bag-in-one-sitting cookies. I know that they also make a small selection of crackers and pretzels, but I don’t really foresee them breaking into the chip game. Fun fact – did you know that Pepperidge Farm is owned by Campbell Soup Company? I decided to start with the Simply Tortilla chips because I figured they would be the safe bet.

The chips are about the size of an US half-dollar, which makes it easy to grab an entire handful and shove them into your mouth at one time. The chip has a very distinct corn flavor with a good amount of salt to satisfy the tortilla chip craving. My only problem? They taste stale. I think it’s because of the baking process, but they honestly taste like you left them next to your bed for a few days and in an act of desperation because you had no more chips left in the house you ate them. Unlike normal stale chips, they are not chewy, which is where my mind kind of gets hung up. Stale taste, crunchy chip, does not compute.

Texture : 4/5 – The chip is very crunchy, borderline cracker. I can’t really put my finger on it, but it does not have the same texture as a regular tortilla chip. Maybe it’s the baking process, maybe it’s something else, but it is definitely different.

Smell : 4/5 – Upon opening the bag you are greeted with strong corn smell.

Appearance : 5/5 – The size of these chips are perfect for me because they don’t result in the dreaded stingy corners of your mouth when trying to jam an oversized tortilla chip into it. They also look just like any other regular store bought tortilla chip.

Taste : 2.5/5 – These chips were Simply Mediocre. The taste is slightly off making this some what health alternative taste a little weird. I did not try them with salsa, which may be a redeeming quality, if you have, let me know! If I want the chip I’m eating to taste like a bag of stale tortilla chips, I will just leave a bag out for a few days and roll with it, not only will it taste the same, but it will be way cheaper. I would not buy these again.

Late July Organic – Mild Green Mojo

Good evening folks! So you may have been wondering where I have been. I briefly touched on it on the previous post, but I figured I would elaborate a little. First off, I hope everyone had an incredible Christmas. Mine was rather short but it was nice to spend time with my mom and dad. About two weeks ago, I started a new job. This is very exciting considering last time I was without a job I was going nuts because I couldn’t find a job to save my life. The stars were aligned when I sent off my one and only resume and they hired me. So far, I’m really enjoying it. As far as the pet emergency, sadly Richard’s cat developed a tumor in his throat and after an emergency vet visit, pills and a regular vet visit, it was time to let him go. It’s been rather quiet and lonely here without him slinking around.

Richard bought these chips, not I as I would not normally go for something like these. But in true fashion, I had to steal some when be opened the bag.

The first thing I noticed about these chips were the fancy typography on the front of the bag, what can I say, I’m a sucker for sexy fonts and visually appealing design. Next I notice were how exceptionally green these chips were. They also had a large amount of visible flavor dusting on the outside. These chips area combination of cheese and lime, which are not two things that I would normally put together. Neither of these flavors are strong, and I can’t really figure out what cheese they used but these chips are okay. With the vibrant color and visible flavoring on the outside I was expecting an explosion of flavor, but sadly was met with more of a sparkler if we are rating things on a scale of fireworks, I guess that’s what this blog has become – hah 🙂

Texture: 3/5 – These have the texture of a normal tortilla chip.

Smell: 3/5 – The chips smell like a mixture of corn, faint cheese and a little lime. Ugh that typed out sounds really gross, but it’s not.

Appearance: 4/5 – I really like the color of the chips, but they only serve as an appearance enhancer.

Taste: 3/5 – Overall I think these chips are okay. I really wish that they were jalapeño, cheese, and lime or some sort of other spice to them. I find them sort of bland but would be good with salsa.

Tostitos – Cantina Thin & Crispy

Hey all! A few food blogs have talked about these “New” Tostitos chips that have been popping up on shelves lately. (Junk Food Guy comes to mind off the top of my head) I have passed them up a few times on the store shelves because I honestly I have no idea how these would be any different than what Tostitos already does. Aren’t most tortilla chips thin and crispy? What does the cantina have to do with anything? When I think cantina, I think Mos Eisley Cantina – if you don’t know what I am talking about right now, I am shedding a single tear alone in the dark in my room for you – and I’m pretty sure they didn’t have tortilla chips on Tatooine. ANYWAYS – I digress.

Last night while waiting for my delicious gyoza at a nearby Chinese food place, we wandered into Bel Air and checked out their latest offerings. I decided to make the plunge and check these out.

This may be the shortest review in the history of Spoil Your Dinner. As predicted these are nothing but regular tortilla chips. There is no difference in the flavor. The only thing that is slightly different is that they are thinner than normal Tostito chips, similar to the chips that you would find at a Chili’s or Chevy’s. They offer up the idea on the back to bake them in the oven or nuke them in the microwave to ‘turn up the heat’ but honestly, who has the time or energy to fire up the oven to throw some already cooked chips in there? Not me.

Tostitos, what the heck are you trying to do here? Rebranding maybe? If that is the case, then don’t try and fool me with a ‘New!’ label.

Texture: 4/5 – I prefer thinner tortilla chips to the thicker ones, which is one reason why I will choose Tostitos usually over Mission chips. These are indeed crispy and will send chip shards all over your bed if you decide that is the place you would like to enjoy these – which I did. If you like hearty salsa, these chips may not withstand the scoop.

Smell: 3/5 – These smell like regular ole’ tortilla chips.

Appearance: 3/5 – Nothing different about the shape or appearance of these. You will still manage to jab the back of your throat with an exceptionally sharp chip corner.

Taste: 3/5 – These taste good – but they are nothing new. I do appreciate that they have a REALLY short ingredients list (consisting of corn, oil, and salt) but again, we aren’t reinventing the wheel here. Next.

Better Chip – Red Pepper & Salsa Fesca

Round Two, ding! I picked these Better Chips at SaveMart a while back and they have been hanging out in my stash for a while.

One major thing that I really enjoy about this brand of chips are their use of real ingredients. If you flip over a bag and check out the listing for the ingredients, you will notice that everything on there is readable and pronounceable. I feel like this is the main reason why their chips taste so good. I previously tried their jalapeño chips and just as those were a home run, these follow right in their footsteps. There is an abundance of flavor in these chips (not just sprinkled on the outside) most notably the red pepper. These also have a smoky chili flavor to them as well that makes them absolutely tasty.

Texture: 5/5 – Despite the baked in chunks of red peppers, these tortilla chips are exceptionally crunchy.

Smell: 4/5 – The spiciness of these chips are very apparent in the smell.

Appearance: 3/5 – The red peppers and salsa ingredients make this chip completely red. They are not coated with flavoring which is nice.

Taste: 4.5/5 – These tortilla chips are really good. They meld the flavors of a hearty spicy salsa and tortilla chip into one. The smoky flavor from the chili adds a nice aftertaste. Honestly I would opt for these over chips and salsa any day. Mmm mmmm….
